Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters

The risks associated with IVC filters are becoming more and more prevalent.

Did you have an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placed to prevent blood clots? Do you believe that you have suffered complications due to the placement or removal of an IVC filter?

IVC filters, produced by a variety of manufacturers, are small, medical devices that are placed in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from traveling to the lungs or other parts of the body. These blood clot filters have commonly been placed in individuals who are at risk for pulmonary embolisms and either cannot take anticoagulants or have tried other medications without success.

These IVC filters have been known to cause adverse events; these filters can move, break, fracture and perforate, resulting in a variety of side effects.

The blood clot filter or fractured pieces of the filter can travel to the heart, lungs and other parts of the body and cause serious harm and even death. Some of the filters have even been known to cause blood clots at the site of the IVC filter.

Below are a variety of examples of class action lawsuits that have been filed against major manufacturers of blood clot filters.

CASES AGAINST COOK MEDICAL

In 2014, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) consolidated a number of cases against Cook Medical to MDL 2570 under Judge Robert L. Young in Indiana.

50+ LAWSUITS TO C.R. BARD

In 2015, more than 50 lawsuits against C.R. Bard were consolidated in the U.S. District Court of Arizona.

UNDISCLOSED SETTLEMENT

In Nevada, Kevin Phillips filed a Bard IVC filter lawsuit after his IVC filter traveled to his heart. The case resulted in a Bard IVC filter lawsuit settlement for an undisclosed amount.

Litigation Facts

There is currently a variety of litigation pending against the manufacturers of IVC filters, including manufacturers Cook Medical, Johnson & Johnson, Boston Medical, and C.R. Bard. Many IVC filter lawsuits are still pending.

Manufacturers continue to stand behind their IVC filters, despite the high amount of blood clot filter side effects. However, after awarding a partial summary judgment to C.R. Bard, Florida U.S. District Judge Charlene Honeywell stated that Bard could still be sued for design flaws and punitive damages.
